⚡️🇺🇳 NEW - At the UN Security Council today, acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea dismissed the IPC’s declaration of famine in Gaza, saying the report “doesn’t pass the test” of “credibility or integrity.” She accused one of its authors of “bias against Israel” and claimed “normal standards were changed” to reach the famine determination.
Shea offered no evidence to undermine the IPC findings — which confirm famine in Gaza City and surrounding areas, with 514,000 people already affected and that number projected to rise to 641,000 by September.
The other 14 Security Council members issued a joint statement after the session calling the U.S.-Israeli famine a “manmade crisis” and warning that “starvation as a weapon of war is clearly prohibited under international law.” They demanded an immediate ceasefire, the release of all captives, a surge of aid, and for Israel to lift all restrictions on humanitarian deliveries.
“Famine in Gaza must be stopped immediately,” they said. “Time is of the essence.”
